Profile

Chet Singh was the son of Jhanda Singh of Karmuwala. He served as a lance naik in the 1st Battalion of the 56th Punjabi Rifles (Frontier Force), with service number 2091. He died on 2 November 1917, during the First World War. He is commemorated on Panel 53 of the Basra Memorial. 1

In The Leicestershires Beyond Baghdad, Edward J. Thompson describes the 56th Rifles leading an advance near Daur on the morning of 2 November 1917. He later visited their aid post on the former Turkish front line. The account gives context for the unit’s fighting on Chet’s recorded date of death, but does not name him or establish his movements or the circumstances of his death. 2
